The very first Star Trek episode made (not counting the pilot episode, The Cage), although not the first aired. It differs from subsequent episodes in that there is no "Space, the final frontier" voice-over during the theme song at the beginning.
Near the edge of the galaxy, the Enterprise discovers a 200-year-old ship recorder from the SS Valiant. Shortly thereafter, the Enterprise passes through an unknown phenomenon which causes major damage and knocks out navigator Gary Mitchell and Dr. Elizabeth Dehner (both of whom have high ESP ratings). When Gary recovers, he begins to acquire telepathic and telekinetic powers. Kirk, alarmed at the prospect of having his ship taken over by an increasingly powerful and tyranical Mitchell, is convinced by Spock to maroon Mitchell at the lithium cracking plant of Delta Vega. Dr. Piper has no explanation for what is happening. Gary kills Lee Kelso, and escapes from his imprisonment. Kirk follows him and is able to destroy him with the help of Dr. Dehner, who is also beginning to acquire the power, but in the process, kills herself.
While on a star charting mission, the Enterprise encounters a luminescent, radioactive cube. When Kirk is forced to destroy it, an enormous ship of pulsating lights appears, commanded by the ominous Balok (Clint Howard). Balok condemns the Enterprise crew to death, and seeing no escape, Kirk chances a desperate bluff. Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy debuts in this episode and the beloved triad of Kirk's leadership, Spock's logic, and McCoy's humanity is now complete.
While gathering specimens on planet Alpha 177 (whose night temperature reaches -120 degrees), geological technician Fisher falls off a cliff and injures his hand. He also becomes covered in a magnetic yellow ore. He is beamed aboard the Enterprise, where the transporter behaves strangely. However, it appears to work correctly when Kirk beams aboard shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, the ore has actually caused the transporter to malfunction, and Kirk is split into two alter-egos, the evil one (hostility, lust, violence) of which arrives unnoticed a few minutes after the good Kirk (compassion, love, tenderness) after the crew has left the transporter room.......
In this episode, a landing party from the Enterprise beams down to perform an annual checkup of scientist Bob Crater and his wife Nancy, who have been living on the planet M113 for 5 years. Without realizing it, each crew member sees a different Nancy Crater. In fact, Nancy's appearance corresponds to each man's fantasy of an extremely attractive woman. Crewman Darnell, for instance, sees a voluptuous blonde he met on Ripley's pleasure planet, Bones sees an attractive woman of 25, and Kirk sees an older woman with more mature charms.
A landing party from the Enterprise beams aboard Psi 2000, an ancient planet about to break up. They find all six of the crew manning the station dead. The circumstances are bizarre, however, since the life support systems have been switched off and everything in the station is frozen solid. Crewman Joey unwisely removes his gloves is contaminated by a red liquid. When Joey and Spock return to the Enterprise, both are given a clean bill of health (for Spock, this is a pulse of 242 and a practically nonexistent blood pressure). However, Joey notices a strange itch and begins to act irritably and irrationally. He threatens Sulu with a knife, then attempts to turn it on himself. To McCoy's surprise, Joey soon dies from the inconsequential wounds which result. The infection afflicting Joey begin spreading like wildfire, infecting almost all crew members of the Enterprise in very short order.
Charlie works especially hard at trying to establish a father figure relationship with Captain Kirk who he looks up to, admires and goes to for advice.
Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock however both have their doubts about Charlie surviving for 14 years completely on his own as now at just 17 years old, he must have been only 3 when his parents were killed. Mr. Spock suspects the mysterious Thasians may have been the ones to help him.
Following emergency reports that numerous Earth outposts have been attacked by some mysterious space vessel, Kirk investigates and discovers while in communication with Earth Outpost 4 the cause. At the very same moment Kirk was discussing the previous attack with the Outpost's head man named Hansen, the vessel which had seemingly disappeared without a trace following the previous attack on the Outpost suddenly reappears firing some type of energy plasma weapon directly at the Earth base disintegrating it right before the eyes of Kirk and his Enterprise crew.
While exchanging cargo with the Tantalaus Penal Colony, the Enterprise unknowingly has provided a means of escape for a seemingly deranged mental patient from the Colony named Van Gelder. He sneaks aboard hidden in a box that was transported from the Penal Colony, knocks out the incompetent transporter operative and steals his uniform until finally he confronts Captain Kirk on the bridge and demands Sanctuary from the Tantalaus Colony.
After Dr. McCoy has examined and questioned the mental patient, he's convinced there's something in what Van Gelder is saying. Captain Kirk is not so sure citing how the Penal Colony is run by the celebrated Dr. Tristan Adams, who has revolutionized the care in such facilities and made them seem more like resorts and less like prisons. Dr. McCoy's response is "A cage is a cage, Jim." Ultimately "Bones" cites enough doubts that Kirk is forced to hold an inquiry into the methods being used at the Tantalaus Penal Colony.
The U.S.S. Enterprise encounters an Earth-like world in Space. The planet is emitting a distress signal so Kirk and crew investigate. There they discover the remnants of a 20th century city in severe decline and decay. There doesn't seem to be any sign of life. McCoy sadly picks up and spins the wheel of an apparently abandoned tricycle, a silent moment for a seemingly dead world, when he is suddenly attacked! by some strange misshapen wild creature?a freakish humanoid with the mind of a child incensed that anyone else should touch "his" tricycle. The creature after being struck unexpectedly dies very rapidly.
Could famed actor Anton Karadian (Arnold Moss) be in reality the mass murderer Kodos the Executioner? Kodos, governor of Tarsus 4 , seized power and declared martial law when the colony's food supply was unexpectedly cut off, deciding arbitrarily who would live and who would die based upon his own personal system of worth. Sometimes families were even put to death right before the eyes of their children. Lt. Kevin Riley was one such child. Captain Kirk himself was a witness to the events of twenty years prior when Kodos seized power. And so was Dr. Thomas Leighton, the man who used the fake promise of a new type of food concentrate which would help end famine to lure the Enterprise and crew off her scheduled course to his home world in the hopes that Kirk might be able to help prove what he suspects to be true: that Anton Karadian is Kodos. Kirk, however, is not so sure. It has been twenty years after all and Kodos has long been thought dead, a burned body thought to be his had been found......
