-------------------------------------------- VI. Memory and Performance --------------------------------------------
Colin McRae Rally 2005 requires at least 256MB of RAM and a 750MHz processor; the performance of the game will improve if you have more RAM, a faster processor and graphics card. Regardless of your machine specs, you can maximize your available memory and increase the overall performance of the game by doing the following:
• Shut down all non-essential Windows programs especially online chat programs, virus checkers and screen layout utilities. • Regularly defragment your hard drive. • Increase your amount of free hard drive space
-------------------------------------------- VII. Graphics and Sound cards --------------------------------------------
GRAPHICS CARDS
Colin McRae Rally 2005 requires a graphics card with 3D hardware acceleration and at least 32 MB of RAM. The drivers for your graphic card must support DirectX 9 or higher. If you are having any problems running the game, please ensure you have updated your graphic card drivers before contacting technical support.
SOUND CARDS
If you are experiencing sound abnormalities such as clicking and popping, you may need to turn off sound hardware acceleration. Go to Start, Control Panel, Sound, then find the sound/audio hardware acceleration setting and turn it off.
Creative Soundblaster AWE 32 and AWE 64 known issues: These older cards do not perform hardware mixing and are particularly prone to poor performance with sound hardware acceleration turned on. Go to Start, Control Panel, Sound, then find the sound/audio hardware acceleration setting and turn it off.
Occasionally, some users may experience poor audio quality when using an onboard nForce sound card in conjunction with certain graphics cards. Please update your nForce drivers and if the problem persists, switch over to the on-board graphics card.
-------------------------------------------- VIII. Command-Line Options --------------------------------------------
To run the game with one of the options below, right-click on the desktop shortcut to the game, and select 'Properties'. Select the 'Shortcut' tab. In the 'Target' box add the following command (without inverted commas) at the end of the line. In Windows 98, this means after the final inverted commas. Note that command-line switches may not always be reflected by current options in the in-game menus, even when they are active.
The command line options are as follows:
"NOSOUND" -> Forces the sound to be switched off. "NOHARDWARESOUND" -> Forces sound cards to run in software mode. Set this if you experience jerky gameplay under Windows 98SE/ME with new sound cards. See "Known Issues" for more information. "NOEAX" -> Disables EAX sound effects. "NOVIDEO" -> Turns off playing of the videos. (The front-end/attract videos audio is enabled unless 'NOSOUND' is also used.) "LQVIDEO" -> Forces the use of low quality videos. "HQVIDEO" -> Forces the use of high quality videos. "ANALOGUECONTROLS" -> Explained below. "STATICBUFFERS" -> Set this to fix the Geforce 4 MX440 crash bug for nvidia drivers below version 43.80. "RESETDISPLAY" -> Resets the display setup. "FORCECLIPPING" -> Enables clipping on all objects which may slow the game down but will correct any clipping issues with older cards "ALLOWHARDWARESOUND" -> Allows hardware sound to be used on Windows 98 and ME which is normally off by default "MULTIDISPLAY1" -> Number of physical displays to support "MULTIDISPLAY2" "MULTIDISPLAY3"
"ROTATEDDISPLAY" -> Allows portrait mode on swivel-base monitors "WIDESCREENDISPLAY" -> Allows widescreen displays
"SAFEMODE" -> Runs in safe mode. This is the same as running with all of the following options: RESETDISPLAY, NOSOUND, NOVIDEO, FORCECLIPPING
Note. If you use 'NOVIDEO' the frontend/attract video still plays, but only the audio. This then keeps the game background music. If the 'NOSOUND' option is also set then the movie is fully disabled.
-------------------------------------------- IX. Controller Setup Tips --------------------------------------------
1. Steering Wheels
There are two different ways in which the pedals might be configured through Windows itself. The most common of which uses a single axis for both pedals. This is the setup default in the game. Users of these controllers can just go straight through the controller options screen and play immediately. If the pedals are configured as two different axes (All Microsoft and Logitech steering wheels allow this as do most others), then the key definitions for accelerate and brake must be reconfigured. Most controllers using separate axes will also need the flip accelerate/brake option set to yes as the values reported through DirectX are in reverse to what you might expect.
2. Controller menu options
The following options are only available when not using the keyboard for control:
Analogue steering and acc/brake - governs whether the steering will be controlled by a button (digital) or by a d-pad on a controller. The key configuration screen which follows will then only accept setup from that type of control.
Flip acc/brake: This is most useful on steering wheels where the pedals operate in reverse (ie when fully depressed they report no value and when released report full) - this can be seen either in the appropriate dialogue box in the Gaming Controllers option in the control panel or in the in-game axis calibration screen. This can also be used for reversing the axis if using a d-pad up/down for accelerate and brake.
3. Calibration
Deadzone - This is a zone within an axis range that is interpreted as being at rest. A range is given here, as slight movements on the controller around the rest state should not trigger actions. In the case of steering wheels, it is greatly advised that the deadzone is set as low as possible.
Saturation - This is the point on an axis at which it is defined as being at full range. Again, bringing this closer to centre for steering wheels is advised to reduce the amount of turn a wheel needs to be at full lock.
4. Analogue controls command line
Using 'ANALOGUECONTROLS' on the command line will force analogue. Setting the steering to analogue will increase the responsiveness of the steering. Moving the controller to full lock will mean that the car wheels will immediately go to full lock. This should provide a more accurate, but challenging driving experience. No game controller should be either added or removed once the game has been started.
-------------------------------------------- X. Known Issues --------------------------------------------
1. You must have at least "Power User" privileges on the machine you are using, in order to play the game
2. When using certain Nvidia Graphics Card, with the latest drivers (61.77) drivers, the game may freeze for a few seconds, when the game returns there may be graphical corruption on screen. This will be fixed in a later driver release from nVidia. We recommend using the 56.72 drivers available from
3. The following Radeon graphics cards will not display the blur effects in replays - 8500, 8500LE, 9000,9100 and 9200 Radeon Graphics Cards will not have no motion blur effects
4. The game will stay on a black screen for about 30 seconds when running on a minimum spec machine, the game will load and play normally. Increasing the amount of system RAM will stop this occurring.
5. When using Windows 2000 and the Audigy LS the engine noise cannot be heard. This should be addressed in a later driver update. In the meantime you can enable software sound with the "NOHARDWARESOUND" which is explained in section VIII, this will be fixed in a later patch
6. If you enter the advanced options and set the Texture Quality to "High", you will then be unable to set it to "Medium" without first setting it to "Low" this will be fixed in a later patch
