[Explained] Drives on symbian phones

Disk C: - storage (”disk”) memory. 4 MB (about 3,6 MB free for the user). This disk is used for storing user data, files and

applications. Disk C: is a Flash disk, which means that it preserves its contents even when the power is off or the battery

is removed. This memory cannot be expanded. If you need more storage memory, you can use one of the compression tools like

Smart Compress or Space Doubler.

Disk D: (in Nokia 3650 - Disk E - RAM-disk (400 kilobytes). This disk is meant for internal system use. Some applications

temporarily store their data on this disk, which makes them work faster (RAM memory is much faster than Flash). It is useless

to save any user data on D: because all contents of this disk are lost when you switch the phone off or reboot the system.

Disk Z: - read only Flash memory (16 Megabytes). Contains firmware (operating system). Contents of Z: drive cannot be

modified by the user. Firmware upgrade can only be made by authorized service centres using special Flash programming devices

and Nokia service software called Phoenix.

Operating memory (RAM) - this memory is for executing installed applications. The size is 4 MB (of which ~3 MB are

available). You cannot install anything to this memory and you cannot expand it.

(Nokia 3650 only) Memory card (disk D - 16 MB MMC (Multimedia card). Flash memory for user data and applications. You can use

this memory to install more programs, store large files (movies, audio, pictures etc). Can be replaced with any other MMC

card - up to 1GB.

If you still have problems with understanding the memory structure of Nokia 3650/7650 phones, think of disk C: as of internal

hard disk of your PC, MMC in 3650 as of second hard disk and operating memory as of RAM of your desktop.

Operator Logos Explained

The operator logo is the picture on top of your phone screen, in most cases is the name of your operator.

How to change it for a nice picture? You can do this by diferent ways:

First create this folder if you dont have it:

C:SystemAppsPhoneOplogo

The operator logo will be stored on it…)

You can use FExplorer (any jpeg/bmp, no resize), seleQ (any image, it will resize it) –> select the image you want be

operator logo, select options-file-set as operator logo.

You can make your own logo:

The operator logos have the following format:

COUNTRYCODE_NETWORKCODE_SUBNETCODE.BMP

For example, for Spain:

Amena: 214 03 -> 214_3_0.BMP
Movistar: 214 07 -> 214_7_0.BMP
Vodafone: 214 01 -> 214_1_0.BMP

In the PHILIPPINES:
Smart: 515 01
Globe: 515 02

The size for bmp is 97 x 25 pixels.

Also, you can store diferent logos for diferent operators. For example if you change your SIM to other operator, you will see

the other logo, or if you travel to other countries, you can store diferent logos for the operators in this countries.

You have a list of country codes and network codes here , just ignore the first “0″ in network code if any.

If you want to delete the logo to restore the original (name of the operator) just delete the bmp file from

c:systemappsphoneoplogo.

How to copy & paste text:
Press and hold the pencil key and select your text using the scroll key.
Left function key will change to ‘Copy’. Press it to copy the selected text to clipboard.
You can paste the clipboard contents the same way:
press and hold the pencil key and press ‘Paste’. Or, press pencil key once and select ‘Paste’.

· Press and hold the Menu key to open the application switching window, where you can *duh* switch between applications.
If a program hangs and you can’t shut it down, select the application in the
application switching window and press ‘C’ to kill it. It’s also a faster way to exit programs.

· Turn on/off the “click” sound made by the camera by selecting the ‘Silent’ profile or by turning warning tones on/off:
Menu > Profiles > “select your activated profile” > Personalise > Warning tones > On/Off.
(This also effects the sound of Java games and apps).
Hold pencil key and scoll down to mark multiple items in e.g. Inbox (sms), Images,
RealOne Player, Notes, To-do-list, etc. Press and scroll up/down again to unmark.

Keyboard shortcuts for zooming and rotating images in Images:
1 = zoom in, 0 = zoom out, press and hold to return to the normal view.
2 = rotate anticlockwise, 9 = rotate clockwise, * = full screen.
In standby mode. press scroll key center (joystick) to go directly to Contacts.

In standby mode, press and hold 0 to launch your wap home page.

In Menu or any subfolder, press numbers 1 - 9 to start the application at that location.

If you have your keylock activated just press the on/off button to turn on your backlight
to look at the time when it’s dark without having to unlock the keypad.
Start your text message (sms) with *0# and you’ll recieve and sms back
with details on when the message was recieved by the recipient.
Start up in Safe Mode so no ‘auto start’ apps will be running:
To make sure that no memory-resident programs start when you reboot your phone,
hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on untill you have to enter your PIN code.
(When you have trouble booting up the phone with the MMC in it because it got corrupted for some reason, this trick will
almost always let you boot up the phone so you can remove the latest installed app which might have caused the
problem or if your phone is “unrepairable” you can still back up your important data before you do a format.)

App Close Main!

You can fix the app close main error..

1) Open your filemanager/explorer
2) Go to c:/system/bootdata & delete FirstBoot.dat
3) Turn off phone & take out your MMC card
4) Turn on phone and put in current time/date
5) Wait for it to boot up then turn off phone again.
6) Put MMC back in and turn on phone.

This fixes the “App. Closed Main” error.

The ultimate guide to get a ******* .app file on your nokia 6600/7650/3650/3660

1. Install a filemanager like FExplorer or SeleQ

2. Connect your phone to a pc via BT or infrared.

3. Install the application .sis file

4. Once installed, send the .app to the phone, should be in message inbox.

5. Now open the filemanager on the phone.

6. Go to the directory of you inbox, should be either “c:systemmail” or “e:systemmail”, the .app should be in one of

the folders.

7. Once you found it, copy the file.

8. Now goto to the folder of the application you installed, which should be something like “e:systemappsnameofapplication”

(assuming you installed to youe MMC) and paste the .app file.

9. If it asked to overwrite, just click Yes.

10. Now launch the application. It should be ok now.

Repairing A Corruptted MMC.
Correct Treatment of your MMC:

Physically, memory cards are quite fragile pieces of high technology, susceptible to damage from various silly things like

excessive heat, condensation, strong magnetic fields, physical damage from rough handling and/or bending! (similar to most

electronic devices then..)

Given the natue of mobile memory card products, they are constantly being taken in and out of some form of interface with a

mobile phone, a camera, a laptop, or desktop PC, or a separate memory card reader. The number of different devices they have

to be able to interact with is in the thousands.

It is not too surprisingly, then that sometimes the state of the file system on the memory card can get damaged.

This may happen for a number of different reasons, including:
> removing the card from a device whilst an application is trying to read/write to it.. (Just be patient…)
> battery drain on a device whilst in use meaning an insufficent voltage failure whilst writing to the card.
> a poor implementation of the MMC standard on the device using the card
> poor connectivity software drivers on the device or the Windows PC/Mac
> physical damage like card or device being dropped, bent, getting wet etc…
> lots of others i am sure..
As often as not, the problem is not terminal for your memory card, but just a software issue ( or in physical terms, it could

be called “a temporary disalignment of the all the bits and bytes on the card”).

The fix for this problem is the same as for any other file storage device (like a floppy or hard drive) with corrupt or

invalid file system, namely; re-format the file system.

Re-Formatting your MobyMemory MMC Card:

It is possible that your mobile will offer you the option of formatting the memory card if it is found to be invalid.

(However, the likes of Nokia nGage, Nokia 6600, and Siemens Sx1 often just prefer to reject the media as corrupted).

In that case, to format the card, you will need access to one or more of the following:
> A Windows PC or Mac.
> A separate multi-format memory card reader (verify that it is compatible with the MultiMediaCard -MMC- standard).
> (This can come in USB or PCMCIA flavours. If USB, try and ensutre it is a USB2 device.
> Alternatively, many of the newest laptop and desktop PCs now come with integrated Multi-format memory card readers.
> If you are using a separate memory card reader, then connect it up to your PC, and let windows recgnize the device through

plug-and-play.
Now you can insert your MobyMemory card into the appropriate slot in the memory card reader. (Please note that because the

MMC card is pretty much symmetrical it is very easy to insert it upside-down in the slot).

Open up [Windows Explorer] (or the equivalent for MAC users..sorry not well-versed in OS X).

There should be at least one icon visible for a [Removable Drive] in the list of available drives. (in fact, there is often a

list of about 5 or 6 Removable drives, one for each of the different Memory card formats that your reader is compatible

with).

Find the drive that is mapped to the MMC card by clicking on each in turn until it confirms there is a drive present.

(Sometimes it is easiest to do this by trying a fully-functional MMC card in the MMC slot first so you can confirm which

drive letter it is.)

(NB. It will always be labelled as a [Removable Drive], don’t mistake it for one of your PC hard drives like [C:] drive, as

that could be catastrophic later on!)

At this stage it may give an error message saying that the drive is unreadable.

By right-clicking on the drive letter, it will provide the option of formatting the drive.

Select format the drive, and the [Format Drive] dialog will appear (Double-check again to make sure it not your [C:] drive!).

There is only one setting to focus on in this page, and that is to ensure that the FileSystem selected for formatting is the

[FAT] option (not FAT32, or NTFS or any other option)

(Note: All mobile phones, to my knowledge, and most cameras (etc..) use the FAT file system (or at least are compatible with

it) on their memory card media.)

Now click on Format Now ( ensure [Quick Format] is not selected as this will not actually restore the file system space byte

by byte, but only resets the header information so the drive thinks its empty again. This may not be enought to solve your

corruption problem.)

The PC will now - hopefully!- chug away happily until it has restored the memory card space back to its original

configuration (of course, any information on there is long gone by now!).

If you recieve an error message back from the [Format Now] request, then your problem may be more permanent, and not just a

software issue. In this case, it may still respond to a format request in a different memory card reader or device.

If you believe it to be a failure of manufacture, then the warranty on the card offers the prospect of a replacement card,

subject to a confirmation of the fault upon return of the goods.

FExplorer Tips & Tricks

* How to reset the operator logo :
1) go to the following dir :
c:systemappsphoneoplogo
2) delete any file in this directory
3) restart the phone

* to make a screenshot on a Nokia 3650, 6600 :
1) use the pencil key + ‘0′

* to make a screenshot on a SX1 :
1) use the shift key + ‘0′

* remember, there are some shortcuts :
: copy
: cut
: paste
: go to root
: PageUp
: top of the list
: PageDown
: file properties

* ’send command’ fails new firmware
with some new firmware, some users have reported that the ’send command’ (thru bluetooth, IR, …) fails; it’s due to a

‘copyrigth protection’ introduced in the new OS (!!!!), this happens only with some kind of files (eg: .SIS), in such case,

simply rename the file (eg: wtih .SIS_ ) before trying to send them.

Can’t Uninstall Applications via Manager?

When you cant uninstall an application(most of the time Java games) using the Manager function of the phone, then do this;

1. Install FExplorer.

2. Launch it and goto the path/folder of the Application. I’m assuming you have install it to the MMC so the path would be

something like,

E:systemapps

and you will see lots of folders in there that is only labelled by numbers(for Java games/apps) or the name of the

application. Go though them one by one. Open the text file in that folder to exactly know the name of the application in that

particular folder if you dont see any icons or familiar name.

3. Then if its the correct folder, “move-out” of the folder, click on Options>File>Delete.

4. Then goto the Manager to uninstall it if its still listed.

5. Reboot.

I know IR is old skool but hey, it comes handy at times especially when BT acts-up on you

This procedure assumes that the infrared device is connected to a serial port on your computer. Use this procedure only if

Windows did not automatically install an infrared device when you turned on your computer. Typically, Universal Serial Bus

(USB), PCMCIA, and other Plug and Play-compliant infrared devices are automatically detected and installed.

To add a new infrared device:
01. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add Hardware.
02. The Add Hardware Wizard starts.
03. Click Next.
04. Click Yes, I have already connected the hardware, and then click Next.
05. In the Installed hardware list, click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
06. Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), and then click Next.
07. In the Common hardware types box, click Infrared devices, and then click Next.

Do one of the following:

01. If you do not have an installation disk for the infrared device, click the manufacturer of the device in the Manufacturer

list, click the infrared device that best matches your hardware in the Infrared Device list, and then click Next.

02. If you have a manufacturer’s installation disk for a compatible driver, click Have Disk. Insert the manufacturer’s

installation disk into the appropriate drive, and then click Next.
Follow the instructions that are displayed on the remaining pages of the Add Hardware Wizard to install the infrared device.
View the Properties of an Infrared Device
To use this procedure, there must be an infrared device installed on your computer. Note that the settings for the infrared

device are configured automatically when you install the device, and typically do not have to be changed. To view the

properties of an infrared device:

01. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Wireless Link.

02. Click the Hardware tab, click the infrared device for which you want to view properties, and then click Properties.
Configure a Serial Port for Infrared Communication
Your computer must support an infrared mode for a serial port. Use this procedure to install an IrDA transceiver that is

provided by the computer manufacturer. To configure a serial port for infrared communication:

01. Start the BIOS configuration utility for your computer. Note that the method for starting the BIOS configuration utility

varies from one computer to another. For many computers, you can start the BIOS configuration utility by pressing a function

key that is indicated during the computer startup process. Some computers require that you start by using special

configuration disks. For more information about how to enter BIOS Setup, see your computer manufacturer’s documentation.

02. In the peripheral or serial port configuration section, change the mode to IrDA or Infrared.
Troubleshooting
Installing an IrDA transceiver disables the serial port. Do not attach a serial IrDA transceiver to a serial port.

Connect your computer to your phone without PC Suite (Widcomm Drivers):

1. On your Nokia 7160: Select the folder “Connect” and then “Bluetooth”.

2. Make sure “Bluetooth” is On and “My Phone’s Visibility” is “Shown to all”. Remember what is in “My Bluetooth Name” - or

edit it to one of your choice.

3. Right click on the Bluetooth Icon in the system tray; click “Bluetooth Setup Wizard”

4. Select “I want to find a specific Bluetooth device and configure how this computer will use its services.” Click “Next”

5. Select whatever you wrote in “My Bluetooth Name.” Click “Next.”

6. Type in a PIN Code. 123 will do. Click “Initiate Pairing.” “Passcode for Tosh” will appear on your phone. Type in the PIN

Code. Do this reasonably quickly, because there is a timeout.

7. Select whatever services you require, then click “Finish.”

8. Read “General Notes” below.

Connect Mac OS X to your phone:

3. Open “Bluetooth Setup Assistant” under Applications/Utilities. Click “Continue.”

4. Select “Mobile Phone” then click “Continue.” Select whatever you wrote in “My Bluetooth Name.”

5. On your Nokia 7610: Type in the number on the screen onto the phone, then accept “Yes” when asked if you would like to

accept a connection from the computer.

6. Type in the internet access codes if you please, otherwise just click “Continue” then “Quit.”

7. Read “General Notes” below

Applies to all devices, you should do this after pairing your phone.

1. By default any connections from your computer to the phone must be manually accepted. You have an option to set up a

connection from the computer to your mobile as authorized, this means when you connect from the computer to the phone it

won’t ask you if it’s ok and will connect automatically.

2. To make this automatic: On the phone in the Bluetooth Setting Screen, you joystick right to the Paired Devices screen,

highlight the computer you are paired with: select”Options”, select “Set as Authorized” and “Yes”. You will then see a

padlock icon beside the paired device - this device will no longer require manual authorization for connections.

3. Now you should set My phone’s visibility to Hidden - so that unknown devices searching won’t see your phone. You can still

be connected to by any paired devices. Remember to switch it to “Visible” if you want to pair with a new device or receive a

file / business card from someone with an unpaired device.

4. Note that you may check your phone’s Bluetooth MAC address by going to the standby screen and typing (*#2820#) in standby

screen.

Gmail On Your Mobile

Ever since i joined Gmail I’ve been waiting impatiently for POP3 support so i could access my mail on my phone. Earlier this

month Google finally came up with the goods and his week POP3 support was finally turned on for my account (Gmail were giving

it to people periodically). So how easy is it to get Gmail on your phone?
The Settings
Native E-mail Client
ProfiMail
E-Mail Sender
WAP Access
Gmail Atom Feed

NOTE: You have to enable POP3 Access in your Gmail settings. There are instructions here if you are unsure how to do this

UPDATE1: See Native E-Mail Client and Gmail Atom Feed
UPDATE2: Consync have a good guide to getting Gmail on mobiles running Windows Mobile
UPDATE3: LonelyCat have solved the problem with Port 465 in release 1.31 of ProfiMail. If you are using Version 1.31 or

later, then use Port 465 instead of Port 587

The Settings
The setting for Gmail are as follows:
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): pop.gmail.com on Port 995
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com on Port 587 (Note: Port 465 didn’t seem to work)
UPDATE: LonelyCat have solved the problem with Port 465 in release 1.31 of ProfiMail. If you are using Version 1.31 or later,

then use Port 465 instead of Port 587
SMTP requires Authorisation
Both of these require SSL to be activated
Native E-mail Client
It immediately became apparent after trying various setting, that i couldn’t use the native e-mail client that came with the

6600 (in MESSAGES) as it didn’t support SMTP authentication (as required by Gmail). A quick search of the better Nokia forums

found that this indeed was the case. So the answer was to find a third-party application that would support SMTP

authentication.
UPDATE: This problem seems to only effect the 6600 and the N-Gage. The Native E-mail Clients for both the 7610 and the 6630

work as long as you put “SECURITY” to “ON” which enables the SSL

ProfiMail
Supports Nokia 7650/3650/N-Gage/6600, Siemens SX1, SendoX, Sony Ericsson Pxxx, Motorola A92x,A1000
For me the obvious choice was ProfiMail which i had heard good things about. The latest version (V1.23) had fixed all the

minor issues the initial releases had and is perhaps one of the best e-mail client around. Once i had paid for the program

and registered, i started to set up the phone.

Setting the account up on ProfiMail couldn’t be easier. Open up the application and it will automatically as you if you want

to set up a new account. If this doesn’t come up click MENU-ACCOUNT-NEW. This should being up the account set-up screen

(left). Under “Account Name” enter what you would like the account to be called (e.g. Gmail) followed by your e-mail address

and “Display Name” (which could be the same as the Account Name). Under “Mail Server Type” make sure “POP3″ is chosen. Then

“Incoming Mail Server” is “pop.gmail.com” and “Outgoing Mail Server” is “smtp.gmail.com”. Under user name fill in your full

Gmail address (i.e. ) followed by the password. If you don’t click “Get Entire Message” ProfiMail will only

download the message headers not the whole e-mail, the choice is yours.

Now click on “Advanced Settings” which will bring up a new set-up menu (right). Leave “Secure Pop Login” unchecked and check

“SMTP Authentication” (as seen on the right). Leave the SMTP username and password blank. Under “POP3 Port” put “995″ and

under “SMTP Port” put “587″ (UPDATE: LonelyCat have solved the problem with Port 465 in release 1.31 of ProfiMail. If you are

using Version 1.31 or later, then use Port 465 instead of Port 587). Finally check both “Use SSL for POP3″ and “Use SSL for

SMTP”. Then click “Done” twice and you’re finished, ProfiMail can connect to your account and you can send e-mail as well.

E-Mail Sender
If for some reason you only want to send e-mails from your phones or want a cheaper alternative, E-Mail Sender could be an

option. This e-mail client does support SMTP Authentication but can only send e-mails not receive them. This is ideal for

people who only want to use their e-mail to Moblog or only need one way communication.

WAP Access
Supports any WAP enabled phone

Now for those of you who don’t have a phone that can install ProfiMail and/or don’t have native e-mail clients (or perhaps

people who don’t want to pay $20 for ProfiMail even though its worth every cent!), don’t despair!
there is also a way of checking your Gmail account via WAP thanks to GmailWireless.com. The people at GmailWireless have used

code from the Gmail-Mobile Project to set up a page which you can visit via WAP on your mobile and log directly into your

Gmail account. I’ve tried this out personally (left and right) and it works like a charm. All you have to do is go to their

main page and register, it’s as easy as that!

Gmail Atom Feed
A while back Gmail added an Atom Feed as a new feature which lead to the creation of Gmail Checker. It’s a great little

Midlet that runs on the 7610 and the 6600 (UPDATE: Also supports Sony Ericsson P900/P910 (when the Equifax certificate is

installed), Orange C500 and the Treo 600). However, Gmail seem to have removed the Atom Feeds for some reason! This is a good

option to keep in mind however as they might include Atom Feeds in the final release of Gmail if indeed they don’t

reintroduce it sooner. (UPDATE: It seems Gmail haven’t removed their Atom Feed feature, but it is only working for a limited

number of people. Check your own Gmail Features to see if it’s available to you)

Bluetooth Connection

There are several methods you can use to set up bluetooth so that your phone can communicate with your computer. This is

highly recommended; if you routinely need to connect your phone to your computer, please buy a bluetooth dongle. It will save

you much aggravation in the long run by circumventing the need to use the DKU-2 usb cable provided with the phone. The DKU-2

cable is usable, but intensely frustrating for everything except very occasional phonebook synchronizations, and one-time

application installation. This guide will demonstrate how to install bluetooth on your PC, and pair your computer with your

phone such that they may communicate.

Installing bluetooth on your PC:

First, you will require bluetooth to be installed properly on your PC. This will not be an issue if your computer came with

bluetooth installed, but for those who purchased a USB Bluetooth dongle, please follow exactly the instructions provided with

the device.

The most important piece of advice for computers running Windows XP SP2 and above, is to install the drivers provided with

the bluetooth dongle before plugging in the dongle. If you do not do this, you will be using the standard microsoft bluetooth

drivers, which is generally slower and less compatible that Widcomm drivers. If you do want to use this, Microsoft has

provided a user guide. Also, if you install Service Pack 2 over your existing Windows XP installation, read these two help

articles if you have having problems with bluetooth device detection or connectivity issues. [One], [two]

If you have unfortunately plugged in the bluetooth device before installing the provided drivers, unplug the bluetooth

device, and do the following:
Click Start, click Run, type %windir%inf in the Open box, and then click OK.
Right-click Bth.inf, and then click Rename.
Rename Bth.inf to Bth.bak, and then press ENTER.
Install the third-party Bluetooth driver.
Also, you should have no problems installing bluetooth if you’re using a Mac, because it’s generally preinstalled, and the

Mac drivers generally don’t have installation issues.

Connecting your computerr to your phone using PC Suite:

3. Open Nokia PC Suite, then open “Manage Connections.”

4. Select “Bluetooth (Microsoft)” or “Bluetooth (WIDCOMM)” as appropriate.

5. Click “Configure” then “Next”

6. Select whatever you wrote in “My Bluetooth Name.” Click “Next.”

To upgrade a phone you have to go to a Nokia service point. Normaly you get your phone back the same day. You also can do it

by yourself, it called flashing. This is illegal to do, but i just going to tell you whan you need to know about this. To

flash a phone, you need a flash cable (not DKU) a flash box and the software and the firmware files.

The firmware code list:
Every phone got his firmware code, you can find it when pressing *#0000# third line
for ex. the Nokia 6230 is RH-12. the meaning of those code is explaned underneeth. This is a older list, I’m searching for

the new one, but cannot find it.
